#OnThisDay 7th September 1983 a referendum was held to add a "right to life of the unborn" to the Irish Constitution, legally blocking all abortion.

After decades of pro-choice campaigning, the amendment was repealed in 2018.

Here are some documents from the 1983 campaign: https://www.leftarchive.ie/subject/2639/

If you're interested in the repeal campaign, we have also spoken to pro-choice activists involved on the Irish Left Archive Podcast (@ILAPodcast@podcast.leftarchive.ie).

In episode 10, we spoke to Ber Grogan about the Abortion Rights Campaign (ARC) and the referendum: https://podcast.leftarchive.ie/@ILAPodcast/episodes/ber-grogan-abortion-rights-campaign-repeal-and-communities-against-racism
